Working with Centrelink

Family assistance is the payment that parents can receive through the Family Assistance Office to help with the costs of supporting a family. Child support payments and family assistance are closely linked. The amount of child support you pay or receive will determine how much family assistance you receive.

• Family Tax Benefit A helps families with the cost of raising children.
• Family Tax Benefit B gives extra assistance to families with one main income including sole parents.

If you want to receive more than the base rate of Family Tax Benefit Part A, Centrelink requires you to apply to us for a child support assessment.

If you receive only the base rate of Family Tax Benefit Part A, you don't have to apply for a child support assessment if you and the other parent don't want to.
